Wat is bowls?
Bowls is a sport where a white little ball, the Jack, is rolled over a mat (rink). The object of the game is to have the playing balls (bowls or woods) finish as close as possible to this Jack. This seems easy but the bowls don't roll straight but curve and the Jack can be pushed on to another place on the mat. It is a game where concentration and tactics are relevant.
The game is played in a sportshall on long mats. Length is circa 30 meters and 4 meters wide. The number of rinks used depends on the number of people present. These players are devided in a way we have two teams on each rink. These teams could be of 1 up to 4 persons; usually we have 2 or 3 players at a team.
Bowls is also played outdoors but at IBC Rotterdam we haven't got any outdoor rinks.
Within the marks on the rink a small mat is layed down on the rink. All balls are delivered from this mat.
At first the 'Jack' is rolled in the length of the rink. The Jack must end within the markers on the rink on the other side and is put in the middle of the rink. In this way a game can be played in a short or a long way; the so called short or long ends.
Then the players of each team play their woods. The first players start and when they have played their bowls the second players will deliver their bowls, etcetera. The number of bowls played depends on the number of players in a team. A team of 1 or 2 players will play with 4 bowls; with a triple game there are 3 woods per player.
The purpose of the game is to have your bowls as close as possible to the Jack. Every bowl closer to the Jack as the closest bowl of the other team counts. It is slightly more difficult as it sounds as the bowls are not exactly round. As a result the bowls curve increasingy at slower speed. The woods have rings on both side and curve allways towards the smaller ring. The trajectory depends on speed and direction of the delivery.
When all players have delivered their woods the points are determined and the end ends. The first player of the winning team places the small mat and deliveres the Jack after which the next end is played in the other direction.
